What Causes Hair Loss?

People normally shed around 50 to 100 hairs daily, this doesn't cause noticeable thinning of the hair because new hair grows to replace it.  Hair loss occurs if this cycle of hair growth becomes disrupted.

The full causes of hair loss are not fully understood however it is usually related to:

  • Hormonal Change
  • Medical Conditions
  • Family History
  • Medications

Hereditary hair loss is the most common condition usually referred to as male pattern baldness or female pattern baldness.  It generally occurs in predictable areas of the scalp such as a receding hairline.

Medications can cause hair loss including those used for cancer treatment, depression, heart problems, high blood pressure among others.  It is also of note that an excess of Vitamin A can cause hair loss.

Some hair loss can be caused by a trigger event such as emotional or physical shock.  This is usually temporary.

Pulling hair to tight can cause traction alopecia and hot oil treatments of the hair can cause inflammation of the hair follicles.

Our use of PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Hair Loss Treatment along with topically applied medication provide excellent results to help stop hair loss and also regrow hair where it has become thin on the scalp.
