What is PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Skin Rejuvenation Treatment?

Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP Therapy for skin rejuvenation is a treatment that uses your own plasma (component of your blood) processing it so that only the enriched cells (platelet rich plasma) remain, and then injecting this into the skin.

PRP contains essential growth factors that stimulate skin rejuvenation. Other terms for this treatment include PRP facial sometimes referred to as Vampire Facial due to the use of blood from the patient in the treatment. The treatment can also be used along with Microneedling to promote further collagen production and tissue regeneration improving skin tone and texture, smoothing wrinkles and replacing lost volume.

PRP therapy has established itself to be effective as a medical treatment in the specialty fields of oral surgery, neurosurgery, plastic, cosmetic surgery, sports medicine and orthopedics. It has been used extensively in these specialties for the last twenty years.

PRP contains special cells called platelets which contain essential and specific growth factors, that can stimulate production of collagen by activating the stem cells and other cells in the skin layers. These special platelet cells accelerate the rate and degree of tissue healing and regeneration,  they respond to injury, and stimulate new cellular growth. This leads to a plumped, fresher appearance.

Published medical literature from Europe and the United States confirms the safety and use of PRP therapy. It has been used as a therapy for over two decades for skin and wound healing.

Inside the Platelets are many intracellular structures such as glycogen, lysosomes and alpha granules. These granules within the PRP contain clotting and growth factors that are released during the healing and repair process.

PRP specific Growth Factors include:

Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (PDGF)—promotes blood vessel growth, cell replication, skin formation;

Transforming Growth-Factor-Beta (TGF-b)—promotes growth of matrix between cells, bone metabolism;

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF)—promotes blood vessel formation;

Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)—promotes cell growth and differentiation, blood vessel formation, collagen formation;

Fibroblast Growth Factor-2 (FGF-2)—promotes growth of specialized cells and blood vessel formation; and,

Insulin Like Growth Factor - (IGF)—a regulator of normal physiology in nearly every type of cell in the body.

If you have any of the following skin concerns - PRP may be recommended for you.

Ageing, wrinkles.
Loss of volume.
Dull, sagging skin.
Under eye circles
Scarring from acne, trauma or burns.

PRP has been used successfully in other medical and surgical disciplines for many years.

The decision to use PRP is a personal decision and should be made after careful research, consideration and consultation with one of our cosmetics doctors who will advise you.

PRP is safe and natural because the procedure concentrates the good cells from your blood and injects them directly back into the area where it is needed. There is absolutely no chance of getting a blood infection from another human being. PRP involves using your own cells that are not modified or changed, and it will not be rejected by your immune system.

Blood is drawn in our clinic by one of our GMC registered doctors as though you are having routine blood testing. The blood is spun in a centrifuge and the PRP is separated and removed from the rest of the blood. The platelets left are then concentrated above the normal blood values. The skin is medically cleansed and a topical anaesthetic cream applied.

The highly concentrated platelet rich plasma (PRP) is then injected into the skin area being treated (e.g under eye dark circles, nasolabial folds). The plasma rich serum can also be applied all over the face in combination with microneedling treatments.

The effects of the treatment lasts from one to two years and positive effects from the procedure continue to improve for one to three months after each treatment.  Follow up treatments are usually every four to eight weeks depending on the individual patient, our cosmetics doctors will provide you with additional information on follow up during your consultation.

Common side effects are slight redness, swelling and mild bruising. This usually lasts 1-4 days.

Patients with a history of heavy smoking, drug and alcohol use and medical diagnoses such as platelet dysfunction syndromes, thrombocytopenias, hypofibrinogenaemia, hemodynamic instability, sepsis, acute and chronic Infections, chronic liver disease, anti-coagulation therapy, chronic skin diseases, cancer, metabolic and systemic disorders may not be suitable for the procedure, please contact us for more information.
